1  Internet & Network Support / Networking Problems / QoS question with Linksys WRT54GL and Tomato on: December 18, 2007, 12:07:00 PM
So I finally replace my DI-624 piece of junk with the WRT54GL and it has been fantastic. No more disconnects through the day!!! Anyway, I have a question about QoS:

I ran a speed test and got my up/down numbers and plugged them into QoS. 6500kbits/s down, 420kbits/s up. Those are 95% of the lowest figures I got running the speed test. Last night I decided to try and max out my upload and play a game, to see how QoS handles the traffic (I setup dst port 27015 as high priority and torrents at lowest priority). I took off the cap of 15kB/s upload in uTorrent and let it go as fast as it can and then fired up team fortress. At first, my ping was 300ms. I then lowered the upload speed of 420kbits/s in QoS to something like 380 and got my ping down to 55ms. No matter how much more I lowered the upload speed, my ping would not go below 55ms. Then I put the cap back on uTorrent and my ping went down to 26ms (what I usually ping on the server). uTorrent was pretty much the only program uploading so I had plenty of free upload speed when the ping went down to 26ms.

My question is, is the ping being twice as slow a result of the extra processing necessary to prioritize traffic when it is maxing out the value you plug into QoS? Thx!

3  Hardware Support / Hardware Devices Problems / 70 year old's final build on: December 18, 2007, 12:00:30 PM
I have a lot of respect for the users of this forum. Am asking for comments on my planned build. I will use it for gaming and some overclocking. Any and all comments will be appreciated. Chances are this might be my final build and I want it to be kinda OK. My specific questions are: should I use 4GB RAM?: should I go step farther and do SLI?; or should I wait for the Nov. NVidea cards? Here is the build: thanks for your input!!

4  Computer Related Discussions / General Discussions / Mini Mp3 Player Suggestions? on: December 10, 2007, 07:38:50 AM
I am looking to get a new mini Mp3 player to use while I am running. I have a couple in mind but I am not sure which one is best. Anyone have any experience with any of the ones listed below? Thanks

Creative Zen Stone 1GB (this one got good ratings on CNET)

Klegg 1GB Mini Mp3 Player (I have gotten a Klegg product before and liked it, so that is the only reason I am considering this one)

Cowon iAudio U2 1GB (another one rated well on CNET though I have never heard of this company)

6  Software Support / Software & Drivers Updates / A Good SaaS Company? on: December 10, 2007, 07:36:36 AM
I am trying to look into getting SaaS for our office. I have heard good things about Olymtech and EnterConnect. Has anyone heard anything about either one of these or do you have a good suggestion for another company? Any help would be great thanks.

7  Hardware Support / Overclocking, Cooling & Modding Problems / Server closet cooling on: September 10, 2007, 07:25:35 AM
I have a room about 10 feet by 40 feet full of shelves with servers. As you can imagine the heat in here is pretty intense, and I find that the central AC that comes in through the ceiling is probably not nearly effective enough. I have a bunch of fans going for circulation, but the tempurature is probably reaching 80 degrees easily.

I'v been looking into portable AC units (no windows in this room, and only one door which has to remain locked). I was hoping for some sort of exuast/drain system that could go out through a hose into the ceiling.

Anyone have good AC units and/or places to buy, or what types of things to look for? Any advice would be much appreciated.

8  Internet & Network Support / Security & Viruses / BackDoor-CVT Trojan on: September 10, 2007, 07:24:19 AM
Hi folks.

I have a Trojan on my machine - BackDoor-CVT

This is what McAfee says about it;

When this dropper file is run, it creates the following file:

%SysDir%\winicd32.dll (18,944 bytes)This file is injected into Internet Explorer's memory space, to avoid triggering firewall software.

The following registry keys are created:

hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows,
nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\winxtx32,
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\mssmgr\

The dropped file will also try to connect to a remote website, like here4search.biz, where it can get an additional configuration file, named text.dat.

I have the latest update but the scan results say that the infected file
(C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WINBFI32.DLL) can not be removed.

If I delete these registry entries will the Trojan be removed or should I remove the WINBFI32.DLL file manually - or would I be screwing up my machine?

9  Internet & Network Support / Webmasters : Web Design Problems / Automatic Changes on: September 10, 2007, 07:21:57 AM
I want to create a function within my site (still planning) which will renew the statistics for a week a month a year. So when a Record is viewed each value is incremented. Then at the Start of a week the week counter is set to 0, then the start of a month the month counter is set to 0.

How can I create a function that I don't need to associate with the User interface to activate. Would I use a Web Service??

12  Computer Related Discussions / General Discussions / Worst Job I Ever Had on: July 26, 2007, 01:08:28 PM
For me, it was the six months I spent doing land titles in the smokey basement of this ancient building. Everyone in the department smoked like a chimney, except me, and we were tucked away in this corner that was like a crypt. Land title documents are the same, over and over and over, but they had this ancient word processing system that wasn't very good, so you had to input the same stuff again and again and again. All this and a ****py salary too. I left as soon as I decently could to what I thought would be a workplace I thought I'd be a "lifer" at ... but the saga continues.

The only good thing about it was some of the women who worked there were in their 50's with these gravelly smokers voices and they'd invite all us young ones over to their houses on a Saturday night to play cards and drink scotch.
