1  Hardware Support / Hardware Devices Problems / Windows Incorrectly Detects CPU Speed on: August 24, 2004, 03:27:09 AM
PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows 2000
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:IBM APTIVA / 500 AMD K6/2
Error Messages:

A few months ago I upgraded my dad's IBM APTIVA from a 350MHz to a 500MHz AMD K6-2 CPU.  I replaced the chip, I didn't overclock it. I set the appropriate jumpers on the board and everything was fine.  The BIOS and OS (Windows 98SE)properly detected the correct CPU speed. Today, I performed a clean wipe and installed Windows 2000. The BIOS detects the proper speed but System Information reads it as a 249MHz.  I downloaded Sisoft Sandra Pro and it reported the same spec - a 249MHz CPU.  I feel as long as the BIOS reads it correctly then it should be OK.  Why the OS doesn't is a mystery.  Anyone have any theories?

I have noticed for some time that the power light to my computer has been flickering and finally after awhile shuts off (the light not the computer).  It seems to have no affect on the performance of my PC - it is more annoying than anything else.  Lately, the power light does not come on at all.  I've tried plugging and unplugging and turning the leads around where the cable connects to the motherboard. Any suggestions or comments?
