PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP
Problem Application Name & Version: Norton Anti-Virus 2005 and Symantec Live Update
Problem Hardware Make & Model: No problem, but it's a Dell desktop, model name forgotten

Error Messages: LU1806

1. I cannot download virus definitions for Norton Anti-Virus 2005 because of a conflict with the Symantec Live Update. Error code is LU1806 and the Symantec fix is to remove and reinstall the Norton software.

2. I frequently get an English error message telling me to remove the Norton software because it and Symantec are in conflict. That makes no sense to me, sinse Norton is a Symantec product. I can delete Norton and Symantec, but not one without the other, since the are the same. Add/Remove Programs gets both of them.

3. I can delete both of them, but can't reinstall them, because I bought them by downloading them from the Symantec site. There is no CD and no product key.

I can get no further information from Symantec, not by searching their web site, nor by phone, nor by live chat.

Questions:

1. How do I reinstall the software, once I've removed it as directed by Symantec, without a CD and product key?

2. If that is not possible, is there another way to resolve this problem.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There is another way - I would forget Norton and install a different AV program.  Here is one recommended by this forum, AVG Free Edition:

geekgirl, thanks for the removal tool!  I spent two days with norten's customer support and they kept telling me I had to remove the ACT data base manager program in order to remove and re install norten's.  This is not the case.  That removal tool worked perfect.  You save me from another frustrating phone conversation!

To Woody and Geekgirl: Thanks for an easy fix!

You were so right. The only thing to do is just get rid of Norton, and use the free stuff - which is also hassle-free, unlike Norton/Symantec. I really appreciate your giving me the advice and the confidence to go on and do something outside the conforming "gotta have Norton." I have now eliminated a major nuisance and closed the open door to viruses that Norton without updates posed. Best wishes!
