Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:Packard Bell Executive
Error Messages:
When i attempt to connect to my isp i get the following error message: "could not detect modem. It may be inuse, turned off or not installed properly"

Why can the system not see the built in modem. This is an old machine which has been handed down to me but aparently it did use to connect fine !!!

Go to the Control Panel, to Modems. On the "Diagnotics" tab hit "More Info". This will test Windows ability to communicate with the modem. If you get errors, verify "Device Manager" to make sure the modem is working properly.

Sometimes the modem is setup right but an application has the port open which would not allow any other apps (including Dial-Up) to use it. Do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to see what other apps are running and "End Task" on any that look like communication programs.
