PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:  Windows ME
Problem Application Name & Version:  Several (calculator, IE, etc.)
Problem Hardware Make & Model:  Compaq Presario (older)
Error Messages:  (none)

My husband has been browsing naughty sites, and recently, he infected our computers (BOTH OF THEM, UGH!) since they're networked.  My computer will not allow the ctrl+alt+delete program manager to open (nothing happens when I hit the sequence).  In addition, basic keys don't work (delete does nothing when I'm editing a web address in the Internet Explorer address bar, the plus sign on my numeric keypad triggers the multiplication sign, etc.).  Please help!  Here's my hijack.this log:

Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the HJT procedures below.

Download / Install / Update / and Run:
Adaware SE check for any updates before running it.
Get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. You can download it at this SITE
To run this tool, install to the hard drive, then open Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Download and install Spybot S&D . Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Scan your pc with one of these free online scanners:
Panda ActiveScan
RAV AntiVirus
Housecall.  Be sure to put a check the box beside AutoClean.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.  Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
Empty Recycle Bins

Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Well, most of the old problems are fixed... the only thing that's weird now is that my pointer arrow has a very rapid flashing of the hourglass.  It doesn't appear to interfere with anything, but I don't think it's normal.  Also, when I did Ctrl+Alt+Delete, I saw one program that's new to me, GetFlash, though that may just be because I downloaded some java software to use with Housecall?

Anyway, here's my log:

Oh, and one more thing... EVERY time I boot up, I get the message that Setup is reconfiguring my files, which seems a little abnormal, as well.

Your log is now clean, have you checked in the mouse properties? Change the pointer scheme to none/normal.
You may also want to set a new system restore point now that your system is clean.

At what point in the boot process do you get the Setup is reconfiguring my files message?

It comes just before the screen goes purple and asks for my network logon (and after everything else, which, as far as I recall is just the COMPAQ screen and the Windows ME screen).

And the pointer thing is getting somewhat annoying.  I've played with all of the mouse settings, to no avail.  I have restarted the computer twice.  It's just this really busy constant jolting that interferes with the rest of what I'm trying to do onscreen.  Not sure how to make it stop.

Have you tried a different mouse all together?
The Setup is reconfiguring my files, did this just start happening since your HJT fix?

Also have HJT fix this entry

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DXM6Patch_981116] C:\WINDOWS\p_981116.exe /Q:A

Locate and delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\p_981116.exe /Q:A

The mouse thing definitely seems software related, if I had to guess.  When I have the cursor over text, it's fine... it's just when it's in normal windows mode that the hourglass constantly flashes on and off, and it's distracting (it's not that the pointer moves, just that the hourglass distracts me).

With regard to the updating configuration files, I only noticed it after I started having the keyboard problems, though it was before the HJT fix.

Thanks, and hope you may find a solution!  Here's the latest logfile... I think it should be clean, though I have no idea what that asquaredscanform element program is... I the only things I use regularly are Pop-up Stopper, Ad-Aware, Norton and Cleanup (and HJT when doing fixes).

The hourglass constantly flashing would make me think something is running. What I dont know, you do however have a lot of processes running at startup. You could eliminate them one by one to find the culprit.
As for your log, it looks clean.
