Hi.

I use windows XP Home.

I believe I have been infected by a virus/worm whilst using the file sharing program Limewire.

As far as I can see this was having two effects:

Firstly Limewire kept continually opening, as soon as you closed it it would reopen

Secondly the task manager would not open.

I have solved the first problem by simply deleting Limewire from my computer, therefore it cannot open. However, I still cannot open the task manager and I am concerned about any other damage that may be caused.

I have zone labs security suite which hasn't picked up the problem. I also regularly run spybot and adaware but they haven't solved the problem either.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please download HijackThis.  It will create a directory folder for you in C\Program files. Run a scan and save the log file.  Post the whole log file here.  Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required).  This program will help  determine what,if any, spyware/malware is on your computer.

Thank you for your offer of help, but I think I have now solved the problem.  After reading other posts about viruses I downloaded the trial version of AVG anti virus and this caught the virus.  I must say I am very disappointed that my current anti virus program didn't pick it up.  I currently use the zone labs security suite which I pay for, it's a bundle including anti virus, firewall and spam blocker. Have you any ideas about which is the best security suite to provide overall protection?

thanks again

The problem is that Trojans can slip through the best defence. Not every virus program is perfect.
