PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:Xp Pro, SP2
Problem Application Name & Version:Winamp
Problem Hardware Make & Model:Compaq Deskpro
Error Messages:

A little while ago, Windows Media Player lost its sound, and finding no answer to this, I installed Winamp (see unanswered post last month), which works fine except for a problem with background noise. This varies, sometimes a 50hz buzz, sometimes a noise like a helicopter, plus other odd crackles and hissing noises, none very loud but annoying just the same.
I hadn't uninstalled Media Player so I tried it again, and now it works !! But it also has the same background noise.
Should this be in the hardware forum?

Ah! a response, a fellow sufferer. Not much more to tell, except it isn't the headphones. Have been totally tied up with other stuff and forgot about this post. I will try a few things and post back soon.

Uninstalled and reinstalled Winamp and WMP, and ran XP install again - no different. I think now that it probably is a hardware problem, but I can live with it.
