Chances are that the problem is a broken Normal.DOT file
do a search for files named "Normal.dot" on your system - rename ALL found to Normal.jnk
reboot, and try opening Word again.

If Word has started even onc, then the file MUST exist!
You haven't said which version of Windows you're using - or which version of Office....

In XP, the Normal.dot file is usually found in
C:\Documents and Settings\<login>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
where the <login> is your username
In Win9x, it's usually in
C:\WIndows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
or
C:\Windows\Profiles\<login>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

All I can think of is that somehow thi file has become hidden and/or marked as a System file.....

Open Windows Explorer (My Computer - go to Tools|Folder Options|View
Put a checkmark in 'Show hidden files and folders'
UNcheck 'Hide Extensions for known file types'
UNcheck 'Hide protected operating system files'
OK out, and do the Search again
