Lock ups can be caused by many things.

Overheating - make sure all your fans, especially the CPU fan, are spinning and well seated on the CPU. Also make sure that the system is free of dust.

Software - Run Windows in Diagnostics Mode for a while to see if the problem persists.

Memory - defective or incompatible memory will cause system lock ups. Test your memory. Here are couple of free memory test utilities: (Run them from DOS)

MemTest86 3.0 -

Hardware - Could be hardware related, either the hardware itself is defective or the hardware drivers are corrupted or poorly written. Update the drivers with the latest of suspected faulty drivers.
