HP Pavillion XT983
built in video
got it for free when I found it next to a dumpster.

at power on no video at all. Can't tell if it even boots or not.
after power on, searches cd burner light starts red then later goes orange. doesn't check floppy for some reason. tried subing a vid card to override internal but didn't work. seems to boot and spin up hdd and everything but can't see anything. What could be wrong?

Hi,

It appears it was thrown out for a reason!

Did they maybe strip out some components, like memory or CPU?

no everything is there. the person didn't know anything about comps and I have been able to determine that either the onboard video is damaged or the whole mobo is. I can't override the onboard video with a card because I can't see to disable the onboard. So either way, i will end up replaceing the mobo. could you suggest a good mobo that will fit a micro atx case with standard ram and socket A? I would like to have onboard video and audio like this one has if possible.

The video drivers for the HP Pavillion xt983 are proprietray and buggy. Also the architecture on many of them was faulty. I'm trying to load Linux on one for a friend and the on-board video seems to be incompatible with any Linux video drivers. My friend went through 3 "new xt983's" from HP before she got this one that has been relatively stable so it's not surprising to me you found one next to a dumpster.

I think the best solution is a new mobo.

Good luck!
