can't log on in safe mode (or regular mode)

i have an IBM ThinkPad T23, running XP, latest updates as of last week, PC-Cillin, and I tried booting up the computer this morning and it won't let me. The Windows XP screen comes up, it does its thing for a little longer than it usually does, and then it says that my disk needs to be checked for consistency. I let it go check itself, and the best i've gotten to is 36% before it just stops. When i try to start in safe mode, it gives me a screen filled with : multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS and then different endings such as "PartMgr.sys" or "atapi.sys" or "pcmcia.sys" Computer was last used 2 days ago without any issue. I am not completely versed in computer-ese, but i'm not clueless either. I've been lucky, computer has run fine for a couple of years, no real issues to deal with, so i'm rusty. Any ideas of how i can log on ? I've also gotten the pxe-e61: medi test failure, check cable & pxe-m04: exiting intel pxe rom operating system not found. HELP !

Hello and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca
Run a hard drive diagnostic utility on the drive. Go
HERE
and find the manufacturer and download the utility.
