Have you tried replacing the floppy drive cable or indeed the floppy drive itself?
Changing both might actually solve your problem without the need to reinstall Smiley
But Geekgirl is right, there are loads of bootdisks on the page she recommended Smiley

i think i've done everything to get the floppy to go, but to no avail. i've replaced the cable, the floppy itself and the battery. i can only presume the battery is ok but i might try another just incase it was flat. otherwise i will check the boot website. i'm not sure what boot to try though it all seems a bit complicated.
                                                                    Thanks heaps for your help.

It could also be a BIOS problem, so you might as well try to find the latest version of your motherboard's BIOS.

To get your hands on a tool to give you the details about the motherboard, try heading to the CPU-ID website and download their tool. It will give you very detailed information about your motherboard and more.

Make a point of reading the howto information on the manufacturer's website before attempting the BIOS update. Print it out if you possibly can and then take all the necessary steps they recommend. Don't skip anything, unless it's irrelevant.
