Okay, hi, I'm new.

I'm running Windows XP service pack 2, Pentium M 1.86 processor, 1024 MB of RAM. I have Mozilla Firefox and Norton Antivirus 2006. According to Norton, there are no viruses on my computer.

I don't know what happened because I let my roommate's friends use it for just web surfing (MySpace and the like), but now when my computer does managed to boot up, sometimes a window pops up that says "Services and Controller App has had an error" then another window pops up saying that "system32/services.exe" status code 1282 needs to shut down my computer and restart.

It shuts down, restarts, but right after the Windows XP loading screen, it just stays black and freezes.

About 1 in 10 times, my computer does manage to boot Windows and work perfectly fine with no error windows popping up.

Thanks in advance.

Pop into the Security and Viruses forum and post a Hijack This log there, after you've read the guidelines on how to use the program effectively.

A quick reminder about Norton though. Once something sneaks through it's sight, it becomes essential system resource, despite being quite the opposite.

I also recommend going to the Windows Updates website to get all the latest updates available. Not only the critical ones, but all the recommended updates as well, as they're not downloaded by your Automatic Updates program.

When you've been assured of your PC being completely clean, come back here and let us know how things turned out.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the help. The people in the Security and Viruses forum were pretty helpful (and better than the tech guys at my school). I still don't know why it was doing what it was, but with their help, I was able to get rid of it. My laptop is now working perfectly again.

That's a great relief, hopefully you'll be able to keep your system trouble free from now on. Smiley
