I think it is a hardware problem, but I thought I would ask first. My dvdrw recorder suddenly stopped writing and recognizing CD's . But still does fine on dvd's
It is a sony and I have had it for a year and a half.

Have you tried to clean the drive with a cd- rom cleaner? Your local tech shop should carry something like that.
Does any other media play in the drive?

It will still burn dvds but not cds

Make sure the cds are clean and even try them in another system. It's possible the laser inside the drive that is responsible for seeing the cd side has failed. Not much you can do other than replace the drive or try the cds in another drive to make sure they are good.
