I have a problem with my startup. The process works fine -- super-fast, in fact -- but then the hour glass comes on and I have to wait, sometimes as long as 5 minutes, until it turns itself off and I can get to work. Even worse, while the hour glass is on I can't even turn the computer off.

What can be causing this, and what can I do about it? I thought it might be my anti-virus program searching online for new virus definitions, but I ran MSCONFIG and unchecked the virus program (McAfee) and that didn't work. As you can see, if I did this for the three dozen or so programs that fire up on startup, I'd spend forever watching because every time you run MSCONFIG you have to reboot.

Any advice would be most welcome. I use Windows XP Home Editions

Hi and Welcome to MyTechSupport.ca

Why don't you give me a HijackThis Startup list for me to look over.

Follow these steps:

Download and install:  HiJackThis
 Click on Open the Misc Tools section button at Main Screen
Check the button "Generate StartupList log"
You will then be asked to save the results

Save the file created and copy and paste into your next reply, I might be able to determine what is causing this issue.

This seems like a huge list, and I'm not sure if it will fit into a Quick-Reply. What's more, I hate to put you to all the trouble, but if you don't mind looking it over, I would be eternally grateful. (Hmmm. Now that I hit paste, I see it does fit.)

The log is alittle hard to read   Roll Eyes
Lets start with you uninstalling either Norton or McAfee, running 2 anti-virus programs can cause conflicts and system slow downs. Remove the one you are not paying for. Norton is a huge resource hog, so if your subcription is invalid I would rather you remove Norton

Next, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove MyWaySA (MyWaySearchAssistant)
Delete C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\ (remove the MyWaySA folder)

Reboot and give me a fresh HJT log.

The minute I rebooted I could see that your advice was well taken. Rebooting was almost instantaneous, without the presky hourglass hanging around. Apparently, you put your finger on the problem. It must have been Symantec.

What I don't understand is why Symantec should have been there in the first place. When I acquired McAfee a year ago, I "uninstalled" Symantec. It disappeared from my Start menu and was no longer on Add/Remove Programs. I've been happily using McAfee since June 2005, not realizing that there were still a dozen or so Symantec files sitting there in C:\Program Files. Not the big ones, but apparently what little remained was causing the trouble. I also deleted MyWaySearchAssistant. I can't even imagine what that program is. It didn't even work when I clicked on.

Anyway, I'm enclosing the latest HJT log. You can ignore it if you like. Please let me know if there's anything else I should do. In the meantime, my eternal gratitude for your informed help. I tried several other places and no one had a simple, intelligent solution like yours. You are GREAT!

Symantec is still haunting you  PC Smash PC Smash

What version of Norton was it? We will use a remover to rid of it but you need to know the exact product and version.

Heres some info if your using any of these versions, please read the Instructions
before using the tools.

SYMANTEC REMOVAL TOOL, SymNRT.exe

    * Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005
    * Norton AntiVirus Professional 2004
    * Norton AntiVirus 3, 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
    * Norton SystemWorks 2004/2004 Professional Edition
    * Norton SystemWorks 2005/2005 Premier edition
    * Norton Password Manager 2004
    * Norton Internet Security 2004/2005
    * Norton Internet Security 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005
    * Norton Personal Firewall 2004/2005
    * Norton AntiSpam 2004/2005
    * Ghost 2003 or Ghost Version 9.0

Removing Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier by using the
Rnav2003.exe

Once you run the appropriate tool, we need to look over a fresh HJT log, I see some issues but want to rid of Norton first.

Thank you for your interest in my Norton Anti-Virus problem. I very much doubt if it's a problem any more.

What I had was Norton Anti-Virus 2000, which is not listed as one of the "problem" versions. I did a Search of my computer for "Symantec" and "Norton" and found nothing. Google Desktop found a lot of articles, which is no surprise, and a handful of "logs" of activities before I uninstalled NAV. What's more, the problem I have of slow startups seems to have vanished.

I've checked everywhere and can't find a thing to worry about. At least not yet.

From what your HJT is telling me the servcies are still running as is the software.

This is your choice whether to ignore the facts. The Rnav2003.exe tool is for Norton 2003 and below versions

OK, my bad. I assumed since I was having no more trouble that Symantec was gone. Apparently not. Anyway, after considerable trouble finding Rnav2003 (Symantec is not the most communicative of companies), I downloaded the blasted thing and went through the uninstalling process.

I can find no trace of Symantec on my computer. Of course, some of it may hiding in my Registry, but I'm not going in there. The last thing I want to do is invite ruin by messing with the Registry. As you can see, I'm no expert.
