Hi

Everything was running OK until I got a BSOD on startup when turning on my computer.  I have not installed any new hardware at all in the last 8 weeks.  I only uninstalled my cannon scanner a week back due to power problems, but that had no problems

The message is

  Stop  0x000000CE or DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT
_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS

This Stop messages indicates that a driver failed to cancel pending operations before exiting.

Possible Resolutions:

* Stop 0xCE messages can occur after installing faulty drivers or system services. If a driver is listed by name, disable, remove, or roll back that driver to confirm that this resolves the error. If so, contact the manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, DVD playback, and CD mastering tools.

I've tried rolling back to the last good configuration but no such luck.

The BSOD suggests that this driver is at fault Cdr4_2K.SYS

Do you have Roxio CD Creator 4 installed? That one is incompatible with Windows XP. Read this help on that.

What if you search for cdr4_2k.sys ? Where does it live?
And if you check its properties, what does it say it's part of?

P.S: Pancake, Cactus, Geekgirl, can any of you move this topic to the Windows forum?

OK, Roxio themselves say that for all errors you get with this file, you need to follow their help on how to get rid of it. I linked to it before. I'll link to it again.
This is for Windows 2000 and XP.

What is slower? Booting up? Windows operations?

Maybe that you need to give the registry a good clean.
Or maybe that a service is just slow at starting up.

Generally windows operations, M/S office now does not start from the programs list, I have to open via windows explorer, also bootup takes a bit longer too

But overall things are generally back to normal,

If you didn't delete anything else but the file(s) in the step by step manual, the two shouldn't be associated. Make a repair of MS Office. The boot up can be a bit slower if there are still remnants of a lookup for the file in the registry. Double check your Start Up tab in msconfig. (Start->Run, type msconfig and hit Enter)

Cannot find the file 'msconfig' (or one of it's components) make mure that the path and libraries are correct and it's required libraries are available

Oh heck... sorry, my mistake. Smiley

Windows 2000 doesn't have msconfig.exe natively. You need to download it.
So, download msconfig2k.exe and place it in c:\winnt\system\
(you can find the file and rename it from msconfig2k.exe to msconfig.exe if you want).

Run that one.
