PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages: 9640, 9646

I have an omnibook 6000, w2k.  The hard drive had a smart error code 9640.  I installed a new hard drive and re-booted with system recovery cds.  At startup I get a message that hard drive failure is imminent.  I ran diags again & got another smart error 9640 and a no bootable partition error code 9646.  Need suggestions on where to go from here.  Thanks

Hi,

Since new drives are usually not partitioned, formatted and made bootable, the 9646 error would make sense if you had not completed the system recovery using the recovery CD.

Does the 9640 error give you more details? If you're getting this error on two drives, maybe the problem is not with the drives but the controller.

Is this system still under warranty?

Thanks for the reply.
A few ?s  What else do I need to do in order to complete the system recovery using the cds?  The only details I get from basic diagnostic is the error code.  Should I run an advanced diag?  Also, by controller do you mean motherboard?  Fortunately, the system is still under warranty, but I would like to fix the problem if it is possible.  What other suggestions do you have?  Thanks again.

Hi,

Since the system is under warranty, get it serviced.

Appears to be a hardware problem. And yes, the controller I mentioned above is incorporated into the motherboard.
