I have Windows XP and have 88 updates downloaded, but they won't install. What do I do?

Try rebooting the computer.

Then click Start -> Run and type services.msc in the box and click OK

Now search for the Automatic Updates service and see if it's enabled and how it's set up to start, if enabled.

The ideal setting for it should be Enabled and Automatic start.

When you've made sure of that, go to Control Panel and double click Automatic Updates.

My personal preference is to set the service to Notify me of updates, but not download and install them.
I do that because I want to keep track of what I update and if I actually need some of the updates it recommends.
If you don't trust yourself to do that, set it to update automatically and preferably at a time when the computer is running, but you're not using it for some important work.

See if that changes anything for you and then report back with the results.

Good luck.
