Power Supply??

I am trouble shooting for a friends pc and would like some help. He has a custom built pc with a hacked version of XP. The system worked fine until a day ago. The OS ran fine and he has been using it for a year and a half, however he had a notification in his taskbar that said it was a non genuine OS and could not load updates. Now, a day ago, his sys would start rebooting by itself at non-specific intervals. I have uninstalled all the software he had loaded and managed to get it to load. However, it still reboots on occasion when you try to open a new program or update something. One of my friends says it could be the power supply, how do i check this as the system boots up and the fan does run. Any ideas and comments would be greatly appreciated.
Update: I have the computer running. However when it starts working under load, such as opening programs, the power supply or something close to it, seems to start making a scratching sound and the fan seems to run slower as if the power level has dropped. Then the screen goes blank and the computer re-boots.

This sounds like an overheating CPU, so check if the fan is running properly and if it isn't filled with dust and grime.
But with OS problems I can't help you, since it's already been said it's a hacked version of the OS. And thread locked.
