I have an old computer that has and is still serving me well; except that for the past three weeks, now, it keeps freezing whenever I use the Internet. Please bear in mind that the computer works fine for [almost] everything else

How do you connect to the internet? Is the cable modem connecting to your computer via USB or Ethernet cable?

Oops!

I forgot to mention that I connect to the Internet via Ethernet cable; and I get high speed Internet.

Try the following:

Open up your Control Panel and make sure it's set to Classic View.

Open Administrative Tools and in there you open up Event Viewer

In there you find three logs. You need to check the System and Application logs.

See if there are any error marks around the time when your internet freezes. If there are, double click the event and copy the message into Notepad. You might need to copy a few error messages, in order to find the relevant one. Once you've exhausted all the errors on display, post the contents of your copy/paste work from Notepad to here. To copy the messages, just press the button displaying two sheets of paper, in the error message.

Good luck
