Ok, here's the bad news.  I double clicked on a video on Facebook which led me to a liunk that looked like Youtube but wans't.  I got a warning from Norton saying it had blaoked it, but it hadn't.  I found myself redirected to another website, had a new Icon on my desktop (online security Guide) and a flashing yellow triangel on the bottom of my screen.  My home page keeps going to about blank - but I reset it!  I did a file search and found Net Project as a new set of files in a foilder.  tried to delete some of them - can't get rid of the lot.  I have these left:

sbmdl.dll, sbmntr.exe, sbsm.exe, scit.exe, scm.exe.

I keep getting pop ups to tell me to download something or check for viruses.  Some of them proport to be from Microsoft.  Some have dodgy spelling.  I've clicked on none!

Here's the HJT log:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Also have a folder called sotfone with 1203003658.dll in it, and another one called helper with 12003003655.dll in it.  Neither will remove.  Both created at exact same time as Net Project.

Checking with Spybot shows Zlobloader and Smitfraud.  When removed, they come back next time - of course.

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall from Add/Remove programs, and delete your current version.

Please download HijackThis to your desktop.. http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

Alternate link
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

=========================================

Please download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Post that log in your next reply.

=========================================

Please download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.  For further information regarding this download you can see this on this Information Page

            Combofix Link 1
            Combofix Link 2
            Combofix Link 3

**Note:  It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Caution...Never run and remove files using ComboFix without being supervised by a security analyst.

We need to install your Recovery Console first.
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file  & save it as its originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.

Ok, here's the log Cf_RC.txt:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

I am up to the part in red where it says please don't reboot your machine.

Not sure what it means directly underneath when it says to download the file and save it...I don't know which file

Anyway, have also downloaded SDfix.

Have "Hijack This" fix all the following items in the list below by placing a check in the appropriate boxes.Confirm that you have only the listed ones checked, then press <Fix checked> and Close HJT.

O2 - BHO: Sotfone Tracker Class - {10C52A42-DB8B-4ade-AA4A-CED6A8282B67} - C:\Program Files\Sotfone\1203003658.dll

=================================

Please copy this page to *Notepad* and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.
1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Open *notepad* and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote

Killall::

File::
 C:\WINDOWS\unins000.exe
 C:\WINDOWS\unins000.dat
C:\Program Files\NetProject\sbmntr.exe

"some"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe which is on the Desktop.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt

Please copy and paste the ComboFix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply  please.

*Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall*

Ok, Pancake, well it looks like you are a marvel yet again.

A few things...the combofix was not on desktop, not on C drive, but it seems to have got rid of all those folders.
O2 BHQ e404 was not on HJT log on first run - hoepfully won't be when I do it in a min.

Will the infection have caused any other problems?  Am I likely to have been scanned for passowrds etc in the meantime, or will I now be safe?
Norton did detect a worm intrusion attempt (rare on my machine) near the ned of my last visit 9beofre I got rid of the files).  Attempt was blocked.

Here we go:

It's late in GB now and I'm very tired.

Will check in tomorrow.  Looks like probelm is 90% gone now,  Hopefully we'll nail the rest tomorrow.

The Home page doesn't seem to want to change now, so that's a great thing.

How safe are the remaining two probelms?

Many thanks again,

David

Just before bed, I noticed that the clever little bugger had put a zip file called "Catchme.zip" on my desktop.  Inside it is a file sbmdl.dll.  Natch I nixed it and emptied bin, though it could be back I guess.

Can you run another Combofix as the log you posted was incomplete..also as a final check...

Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        • Scan Mail Bases[/color][/b]
    • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Ok, I found the combofix file in the combofix folder, but it doesn't seem to say much:

ComboFix 08-02-15.1 - David 2008-02-16  7:35:13.4 - NTFSx86
Running from: C:\DS Temp Files\ComboFix.exe
.

I will now download kaspersky and get back to you in 5 mins.

Meanwhile that trojan keeps trying to get in and failing:

Norton says:

Default Bla Trojan horse blocked everytime I go online.

OK, Kaspersky won't download because I wasn't running on administer.

I've googled some of this, but it seems a bit dicey - folks saying they logged in and couldn't log back to their previous user etc.

Can you run me through how I do it?  I've checked in control panel with various things which don't do it, tried logging off etc.  Think it needs to be done in Safe mode - not sure how.
