Give this a run...

Download the program HostsXpert

Unzip HostsXpert.zip
It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
Click the Make Writeable? button.
Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
Click the X to exit the program

I followed your instructions.  While the first two warning messages of LU1860 & LU1862 didn't show up, the third message:
"LU1841: Live Update could not connect you to your Internet Service Provider.  Verify your dial-up information is correct" did still come up.  Seeing as I'm connected to the internet to be able to type this, I'm sure there's nothing wrong with my connection.  Any other suggestions?

You didn't ask for it, but in case anything changed, I ran another hjt & here is that log.

Sound like a setup problem with Symantec.I would try reinstalling it again and if no luck try one of our other forums and see if they can help because it clear its not malware related. Also try this..
