So I've had my laptop for about 6 weeks and it's been absolutely fine. Last night I was downloading some music and playing about online, which is not unusual for me. Suddenly the screen froze (although the pointer still moved - it stopped moving after I pressed a few keys) and I had to turn it off and restart. This has happened every single time I have used it since then. I have restored the system to 2 days ago in an attempt to undo any damage that might have been done, but it's still happening. I can't work out exactly what the problem is, but it's as if the hard drive just gives up and freezes every now and then. It did it today when I wasn't even online - I tried to open a folder and it froze, and the next time I tried to open Media Player.

Is there a way of finding out what is causing this, and has anyone else had a similar issue? I seriously can't afford to get it fixed but I am bored out of my mind most days (I moved to Vancouver from Scotland and I have no money so am stuck inside when not working) and I need a laptop for music, dvd etc. And it's working long enough for me to post this, apparently, so yay, but I just have no idea when it will change its mind.

I tried to contact Dell via online chat but first they were all like 'oh you're abroad so we can't do it on UK site' and then the Canada site was all 'oh you bought it in the UK so we can't help' so HOW is that useful??

Any advice very welcome.

Oh yes, it's a Dell Inspiron 1525.

Thank you!

Lets start with you finding the manufacturer of your hard drive and run their Hard Drive Diagnostics Utility.
