The help for my system went so well that have now run it on my dad's system.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware  and  AdAware  and  SpyBotSD have all been run and recommendations taken.

All seems ok with the system EXCEPT for an annoyance that there seems to be an intermittent problem with a delay in initiating some activities -- EVEN when NO OTHER APPLICATIONS are running. There are even times when the characters on the screen lag behind the keyboard even though the typing is at a hunt-and-peck speed.
Advice appreciated.
