HP DV5250CA
Windows XP SP2
120GB HD

recently got this used laptop, now I'm having tons of problems with it.  I recently did a system restore and started fresh because i was getting the "SMART Failure" msg and the computer kept restarting on the windows loading screen, and would not boot in any safe mode.  Luckily I did have a chance to back up my stuff before hand.  I am getting the same failure notice now and a couple more problems.

1) Smart Failure predicted on hard disk 0: ST912082AS-(S1)

When I try to run scandisk I get this msg: "Windows can't find 'scandisk' Make sure you typed the name correctly....etc"

2) Sometimes after XP boots up the backlight behind the screen will just shut off.  If i don't do anything then it comes back on.  Not a big deal but a little annoying.

3) when running on battery power, the computer will make a clicking sound, and unless i plug in the adapter the screen will go just go black and will not shut down by holding the power button.  When i finally apply the power to it, the screen goes all wierd (hard to describe, black and white boxes across it) and can finally hold the power button down to shut it off.  This is especially annoying b/c the pice of **** adapter i got off ebay has to be bent the right way to work.

I would appreciate if anyone could help me out.  Would replacing the HD solve these problems?  Thanks everyone!
