PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: xp home
Problem Application Name & Version: any
Problem Hardware Make & Model: time traveller laptop 1.8Ghz Amethlon
Error Messages: none

The laptop frequently just locks up completely. Ctrl+alt+del has no effect. Sometimes it won't even start up. regular holding down of the 'on' button switches of the laptop ready to try again.
'Lockup' occurs any time and in any application, sometimes I'm connected to broadband, sometimes not. Does this sound like hard drive or memory problem? Can anyone advise?

???Could a faulty battery cause 'lock-ups'? even if connected to the charger? I removed the battery and powered the laptop by mains power. It seems to be running smoothly again.

Hi,

Very interesting observation! I would have been tempted to think not but perhaps the 'faulty' battery is putting too much strain on the system trying to charge it and causing fluctuations which is making the system unstable.

Try running it for a while and if the problem is undeed fixed, try replacing the battery. Maybe you can try contacting the laptop manufacturer's support to see if they have encountered this problem before, could be a known issue.
