PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

I was running Windows 98 with an internal Modem Dataflex 34 Voice Server, and decided to upgrade to Windows 2000, after upgrading found that drivers for modem were not compatable for Windows 2000, nor could I find drivers for the same.

When I now try to re install Windows 98, the computer tells me to start up in MS DOS and then boot by 98 CD, can you please advise how I start up up in MS DOS, and with the procedure, thanks

Hi,

If your system doen't support booting off cds (check motherboard manual) then use a Windows 98 Startup disk and select option to load cdrom support. Check to see what drive letter is assigned to your cdrom drive when the drivers load.

Then once at the a: prompt, type 'X:' <ENTER> (no quotes) - where X is the drive letter you saw assigned to it.
Then type 'cd win98' <ENTER> (no quote)
and then 'setup' <ENTER> (no quote)

Let me know if you converted to NTFS file system during Win2000 installation, this will require additional steps (if Win98 setup doesn't recognize the hard drive)

Hi,

Since Win98 doesn't support NTFS file system, the only way to get Win98 installed is to wipe the drive clean! This means all data will be gone!

Make sure you have a backup of your important files.

If you still want to go back to Win98, boot off the Win98 Startup disk and at the A: prompt type 'fdisk' <ENTER> (no quotes), delete the partition (may be considered a non-DOS partition) and recreate a primary partition (C: drive) and any extended if needed. Reboot off the Win98 Startup disk with cdrom support option and run setup as above.
