PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:Windows 98 2nd Edition
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:HiVal CD-RW 52x24x52
Error Messages:

This was my old computer and now is used by my kids, mostly to play games.  Recently, the CD-ROM wasn't recognizing their CDs.  Not wanting to spend much money on this, I bought a CD-RW on sale.  The installation appeared to be very easy and the device manager recognizes this installed drive.  Unfortunately, this drive apparently doesn't recognize the CDs either; the computer will ask for a disk to be inserted when it already is in the CD-RW.  One person I was speaking with suggested that I reinstall Windows 98 because it sounded like a problem with my operating system.  Unfortunately, it came preloaded on the computer and I can't any sort of a disk.  Any suggestions?

Hi,

If your computer came with a pre-installed Windows, check out "c:\windows\options\cabs". If there are many *.cab files, then this folder contain the Windows installation files, find setup.exe and run it to execute Windows setup.

PLEASE NOTE: Make sure you have all the drivers needed for your hardware (e.g. sound card, windows modem (if that is what you have), network card...) because you may give yourself a bigger headache if you don't have these.

or

try to solve this problem...

Is there any devices in Device Manager with a yellow dot and exclamation mark? Is there a type named "Other Devices". On the system properties page, the same one that contains Device Manager, go to the Performance tab, is the system working properly message displayed?
