I have a related problem under Windows XP

I have some old files in temp. folders which I wish to delete. However I try (under Windows, DOS or cleanup programmes) I get the message 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process'

The files are clearly not in use and changing file attributes does not help. Has anyone any ideas for getting rid of such files please?
