I am so sorry for my absolute computer ignorance but thank you to whoever set up this site and I only hope someone can help and I am posting vaguely near the right area.

In an effort to solve the problem of a broken screen on my mobile phone today I paid through the nose for a siemens data cable only to find that my laptop doesn't have a serial port. the cable didn't come with any instructions but I am guessing this is an essential. is there any way I can use one of the other ports on my laptop via a convertor or something to set this device up, or can you get an external device or something. Please help! and again, excuse the poor explanation of the problem.

If the connection can only be done through a serial port then you will need a serial port.

Does the mobile phone support a USB data cable, assuming your laptop has a USB port?
