???I have a system running W2K.  I performed a disk defrag and started to reboot.  The system stops the reboot after the POST and I have a screen with just a blinking cursor.  I have tried the Emergency Repair Disk and re-installing the OS.  It still stops and displays a blinking cursor.  There are files on the HD that I need.  Any suggestions to get windows running again without re-formating?

Hi,

Have you tried re-installing Win2k on top of what is there in the hope of fixing the damaged files?

HI Admin,
After searching in the deep bowels of MS KB, they mention that this is a problem with W2k and XP.  They gave no mention of a fix and leave you hanging as usual.  I took a chance and did a chkdsk/p on the HD and then rebooted.  I still got the blinking cursor, so I tried to load the W2k OS.  To my astonishment, it started loading the OS with a message that the OS could not be found.  Obviously, the defrag totally corrupted the OS from the get-go.

Thanks for you advise!

Hi,

Sounds like the boot.ini file (which points to where Windows is installed) could be incorrect or the boot sector is corrupted.

You may want to try fixing this by booting up with the Recovery Console and using the FIXBOOT command.
