Headphones plugged in - sound through speakers!

PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model: Speakers/headphones socket
Error Messages:
I recently had to take Windows XP off my computer and reinstall it after a big mistake that caused irrepairable problems. The problem is that when I reinstalled XP, the sound would come through the speakers even when I had my headphones plugged in. I have tried readjusting the sound set-up in Control Panel to no effect, and am puzzled that I never had this problem before. Can someone advise me as it's driving the people I live with nuts!

Hi,
Are you using the headphone jack on the cdrom drive or at the back of the system in the sound card (if one exists)?
Use your Windows sound mixer to mute or lower the sound. The front jack on the cdrom should still work since they are seperate.
