PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: XP & 98SE
Problem Application Name & Version: Internet Connection Sharing
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

Computers see each other & both ping successfully. The set-up is, DSL modem to XP, NIC 1; XP NIC 2 to 8 port 10/100 switching hub; 98se to same hub. 98Se is set up for TCP/IP.
Used XP wizard to set up ICS, NIC 1 is set to enabled, sharing, firewall. used wizard on 98SE for setup.
XP connects to ISP without problem. 98SE sees network but cannot get to internet.
change XP NIC 1 to disable firewall. connection to ISP disconnects automatically after 59 seconds or 1 minute 59 seconds.
change XP NIC 1 to disable ICS. connects to ISP without problem.
Changed 98SE to static IP address - same results as above.

Hi,

Make sure the gateway IP on the Win98 system is the IP of the WinXP system.

Thanks - the gateway IP on 98SE is correct. But a friend found the solution. The ISP I use has a VPN connection for the ADSL. The wizard presents the NIC and the VPN as possibilities for the internet connection - I used the NIC but the VPN is the one that needs the sharing (and firewall). In addition, the DNS server addresses for the ISP (preferred and the alternative) were incorrect. As soon as both problems were corrected, everything works fine.
