PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows ME
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

For a few months now my CD RW and DVD ROM drives haven't worked.  One day I booted up my PC and neither drive was listed in My Computer.  I only had a C and A drive listed.  My DVD drive would open however would not auto run any program put into the drive and the CDRW doesn't even appear to have power.  I.E. the drive won't respond to being opened.  Thoughts on where to start?

First thing to check is your power and ribbon cable connections at the back of the devices to ensure they are getting power and the ribbon cable properly seated.
Always check the simplest things first.
If those things seem fine, we can troubleshoot further.
Thanks

Everything appears to be inserted correctly and the DVD drive definitely has power because the door opens and closes.  The CDRW does not open nor does the light up when the PC is booting.  Thoughts?

CDRW may be deceased.  If you can borrow one from work or a friend for a few minutes it will be verified pretty quickly. If you DVD player is set to slave, set it to master (the little jumpers on the back...check owners manual) that might take care of it once the CDRW is resolved.

This issue has been resolved.  The CDRW appears to be bad.  When unplugged from the IDE the DVD rom works just fine!  Thanks everyone.

Sorry about the deceased CDRW but glad you got it straightened out.
And thanks for letting us know!
