Operating System Version:Win98
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:

I've been trying to do a defrag on my harddrive but it stops and restarts with the message that the harddrive is being written to, but nothing else is up or running. When the PC is sitting there running nothing, the harddrive LED flashes on every 5 seconds or so. How can I find out what's running in the background, is there some piece of software or some piece of logic I can use to find out what's going on? Scandisk also fails for the same reason.

There are many software that will cause this, an antivirus software - disable it, Fast find or Quick Finder (indexing your files) - remove indexing...

The best thing to do is boot up in Diagnostics Startup Mode (if using Win98SE) which will not load any apps during start up and allow both scandisk and defrag to run to the end.
