After working normally for years my cd rom does not function! When I insert a cd I get a message that says " D\:is not accessible. The device is not ready."

If you're comfortable with it, remove the case and check the cables that connect to the back of it for good solid connection. If that seems fine, I would borrow one from work or a friend just to install and see if that one works in your computer.  Mine died recently with only about 50 hours of use on it.  Pretty cheap to replace now though.
Hope this helps!
