PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: Windows XP
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model: Dell Latitude C640 Laptop
Error Messages:Error reading disk drive

Hi,

When I went to turn on my computer today, I got an error message "error reading disk drive, press ctrl-alt-del to restart" so I pressed ctrl-alt-del and I keep getting the same message. I ran CHKDSK and it only gets to 6% and then says there are "unrecoverable errors". Does this mean my hard drive is no good?? Is there a way that I can still get my info off of this hard drive?

Thanks

Hi,

The drive has bad sectors. Can you bootup into Windows or do you get the error message on bootup?

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I can't boot into Windows at all. I get the message within 5 seconds of booting up. The Dell logo comes across the screen and then that's it. I ran CHKDSK through Windows XP Recovery Console.

You said that the drive has bad sectors, will I be able to repair them? Please tell me yes!

Thanks for the help,

Hi,

If your system doesn't boot up and the bad sectors are at the begining of the drive, especially where the FAT is kept, you could have data loss.

Run 'CHKDSK /r' through the recovery console to fix bad sectors.
