PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: xp pro
Problem Application Name & Version:
Problem Hardware Make & Model:ibm dtla 307060 hard drive
Error Messages:none

i have two hard drives, my main one that holds windows makes a scratching noise as if it is trying to find data held in a contaminated sector on a disk. when this happens the system freezes but allowing the mouse to  move.
if i was running windows 98 i would run a scandisk search, but as i am now on xp i can't. does anyone know what the problem is and what i can do to fix it?

cheers

i fixed it by going to accessories--> windows explorer-->right click on the drive-->properties-->tools-->check now. this is how scandisk works on xp.
i had about fourteen unreadable sectors. the problem is now resolved.Smiley
