Are you running in safe mode?  F8 while booting and then select Safe Mode.  Disable your screen saver if you need to and then run it.

If it also gets stuck in safe mode:
Try running chkdsk first.

You can also try this
(1) Use ctrl-alt-delete and kill everything EXCEPT systray and explorer
(2) start defrag

Hey Aussie Boy, CHKDSK is for NTFS partitions only. Else please explain how I can use it on win 98 or FAT 32 discs?Huh?

derrrrrrrr, huh? WHAT

simply, again you have not read the column.

Jeff

Sounds as if you have failing sectors on your HD at the locations SCANDISK has suggested (eg 1%).
Scandisk and NDD will always halt at these for hours if not days.

Do yourself a HUGE favour and download this shareware AND RUN IT FROM TIME TO TIME.

HDD Regenerator by Dmitriy Primochenko

HDD Regenerator regenerates bad and failing sectors by magnetic reversal. If your hard drive is
damaged by bad sectors, the disk not only becomes unfit for use, but also you risk to
lose information stored on the disk. HDD Regenerator will regenerate your hard disk
(almost 60 % of damaged hard disks are subject to regeneration). As a result, not
readable damaged information will be restored. With all this going on the existing
information will not be affected!

Hi,

PANCAKE was on the right track, but run scandisk instead at the DOS prompt by either shutting down to MS-DOS Mode or booting into MS-DOS mode using the <F8> key to access the boot menu.

Make sure you run the surface scan to verify for bad sectors. This could be why defrag fails.

Let us know what scandisk finds.
