A constant light on the floppy drive usually indicates that the ribbon cable is connected reversed at one end.

I have windows 98 system.56k memory.Nec monitor. Acer 56x hardrive. Why does my floppy disc not work when it is inserted into system? No light or error message .
It has worked previously in the past. Does it not supposed to work by itself when it is inserted or do I have to go to a place to activate it? It is a disc that already has info on it that I would like to retrieve.

you could try buying a replacment floppy drive they are about a tenner from Pc World

if that dosnt work try getting an external one - about £30 - N.B the external one wont work in MS-DOS so you can only use it in windows itself.
