Trying to install Win98SE on a friends existing computer.

The computer did have XP on but got completely wiped before I got it.
Unfortunately no original XP disks available (grrrrr) and rescue disks are of no use (XP was preinstalled).
Therefore using one of my dead computers W98SE disk to make sure I can get it running before purchasing a new copy of XP.

Here is the problem:

Boot from A: bootdisk (thx to bootdisk.com) ... ok
fdisk one partition ... ok
format disk ... ok
run setup from cd (have also tried from C: with a copy of the dir)
setup scandisks ... ok
then when copying the system files required for install the setup crashes. No error message returned and returns to dos but with lots of incomprehensable symbols.

Have tried another copy of 98 but same occurs (thought that the setup may be corrupted).

BIOS settings look ok.
Any suggestions?

Thx

I believe that the XP install was NTFS. However, the disk is now reformatted/fdisk to FAT32.

When you put in the bootdisk and go to type "fdisk" and press option 4 what does it say
