Debbie,
In Microsoft Word click on Tools then Options.
Select the Print tab.
Make sure the Default tray at the bottom is set to "Use Printer Settings"

Hi,

Is your printer properties set to print color or grayscale? Try grayscale to see if problem persists.

Also, is your black ink cartridge empty?

i have tried printer properties, that hasn't worked.
The ink isn't empty, it works on printing e.mails and from internet, word is my only problem.  The only other thing i can think is that i am using compatable ink, would this cause the problem

When you say you are using "Compatible ink" did you refil the cartridge yourslef ? If so, then try a new cartridge
