If you are using an XP Home and the disc is in, double click My Computer and explore the drive the disc is in for the Setup.exe file.

thie disk is suposed to start before windows has a chance to load. the disk doesn't have a setup file only BOOT files. if i have a disk in the A: drive the computer recognizes it before windows starts. this is not the case with the D: drive. That is the problem i can't figure out. Why?

You don't need to do all these. Just click:
Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore.
Now let the wizard interface guide you and... you are propably done!

So... the only solution that seems to be left is formatting.. A good idea could be to back up your system using  the Norton Gost utility.
