PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version: windows XP
Problem Application Name & Version: IE 6
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages: not responding

i've had this problem for a few days now, at first i just thought my computer couldn't cope with doing many things at once, but now i've realised it's crashing on certain sites, like hotmail and google.
eg i get into hotmail, try to open my junk box and then it slows up and displays the "not responding" thing at the top.
the same happens when trying to do a search on google.
i thought this might be a problem to do with mydoom or another virus, but hav run a stinger, turning off system restore and this hasn't helped.
my computer has been slower generally recently, and msn and media player have also been "not responding". task manager has had a lot of use recently!
i'd appreciate any ideas anyone has on what to try!
thanks

Hi,

Do you have a firewall installed? If so, try disabling it temporally to test.

Also run a spyware remover to clean your system:

thanks for your reply, i didnt think i had a firewall, but under my internet connection it says i do! i'll try turning it off to see if this helps, and also run the spyware remover.
i'll let you know how this goes, thanks again.

well i tried the spybot program and removed several things using it. also tried disabling the firewall. both had no results, i still can't look at my junk mail folder in hotmail (the rest of hotmail seems to be ok) and can't use google.co.uk, but can use google.com . (I used to use google.co.uk most if this helps)

ive asked lots of people if they have any ideas and they're all very confused. so i'd appreciate any ideas!
thanks a lot

Hiya

Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds.

Then, Go here for the free Ad-aware 6 Personal http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

Then please launch the program ... on the start-up screen, you will need to first run the Webupdate Feature (globe at the top), or click "check for updates" on the start screen to get the Reference File up to date.

Please use either the Custom Scan with Memory and Both registry scans ON. Also.... make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning.

Then, see that you have these options checked:
Under Ad-aware 6 Settings, Tweaks, Scanning Engine:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under Ad-aware 6 Settings, Tweaks, Cleaning Engine:
"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Next ...

Run Ad-aware 6.
Mark the objects you wish to eliminate for removal. There are many options available with a right-click.
Make a Quarantine only if you do not have the Auto-Quarantine option ON.
Then choose "Next" to remove the chosen objects.
Finally ... Reboot

That ought to get rid of most of your spyware.

When you've done all that, go to http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Regards

Nothing seems to out of the ordinary at first glance.
But just to make sure we are reading everything could
you please download the latest version of Hijackthis

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
It is in .exe or .zip form
Could you make a permanent folder for Hijackthis--
EG...Right click on desktop and create a new folder---name it HJT
Save Hijackthis to that folder or extract to that folder.

Also, could you please visit Windows Update and get Critical
updates for security reasons and fixes.

Repost a new log afterwards

had same problem until about a minute ago.  try going into internet options, content, and click on "Clear SSL Slate".  that seems to have fixed this problem on both XP boxes in my house.  best of luck.
