PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:WindowsXP
Problem Application Name & Version:Earthlink TotalAccess2004
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:"D:\Windows\Access\Earthlink TAR.msi returned 1635"

I am unable to install Earthlink TotalAccess2004 and continually receive the error above. Microsoft say that it is an Earthlink problem. Earthlink says it is an OS problem!
I have done the following to try to fix it(Some several times):
1. Reloaded WindowsXP and all the updates.
2. Removed Earthlink, via regedit, from my computer and tried to reload it again.
3. Ran "RegistryMechanic"
4. Installed MDAC 2.8 from Microsoft
5. Tried installing from the internet instead of the CD.
6. Pulled my hair out and cussed a blue streak. This didn't help,but, made me feel better for a moment.

Where does the TAR.msi error come from and how can I get past it?

Was this problem solved? My son is having the exact same issue with his windows xp and we cannot figure it out. We would appreciate any help on this.

Sorry, I never did get this resolved, even with some extensive chatting with Microsoft and Earthlink. I finally dropped Earthlink and went back to AOL.

Follow these steps to resolve *.msi error 1635 when installing Earthlink TotalAccess 2005  


Problem

Error: 1635 - "Earthlink Common.msi returned 1635" while trying to install TotalAccess 2005

Solution


Abort EarthLink TotalAccess 2005 installation
If EarthLink TotalAccess 2004 was previously installed backup any Mail Folders
Install and Run Windows Installer Cleanup Utiltiy
Remove all items named EarthLink in program
Remove items in folder for Earthlink TotalAccess except taskpanel.exe if it cannot be deleted
Try reinstalling EarthLink TotalAccess 2005

 


How to Fix installation error 1635

If you get this error below during the installation of EarthLink TotalAccess 2005, click OK and abort of the installation.


If EarthLink TotalAccess 2004 was previously installed backup any Mail Folders by clicking here "How to Export Email Messages from EarthLink TotalAccess 2004 Mail" and following the instructions.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 to learn about the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Click Here to download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Click the Save button.


Double-click the msicuu2.exe icon.


Click the Next button.


Take a moment to read the License Aggreement.
Select I accept the Licenst Agreement.
Click the Next button.


Click the Next button.


Click the Finish button.


From the Start menu, click Programs, and choose Windows Install Clean Up.


Highlight everything that says EarthLink, Spyware Blocker and ELN Bonus.
Click the Remove button.


Click the Exit button.
Double-click the My Computer icon.


Double-click the Local Disk (C:) icon.


Double-click the Program Files icon.


Double-click the EarthLink TotalAccess icon.


Delete all the contents of the EarthLink TotalAccess folder.
Note: If you can not delete "TaskPanel.exe," it is okay to leave the file.



Now try to reinstall EarthLinkTotalAccess 2005.
