Hi SJ,
Yes I installed the mobo software and even went to asus & got newer versions but the usb drivers on windows xp were newer still.  Thanks for the suggestions.  Also I didn't think to mention that I get a working light on the dvd when booting.

Hi ABC,
I have hte same mobo & what I had to do was go into the device manager, right click the sis 7001 controller cause that was the one that was flagged.I selected "update drivers".The wizard came up & just followed the prompts & it installed the drivers from the cd.Also, check in the device manager to see if the secondary ide is flagged too.
Take care.

Hi Sandy,
I thought you might be onto something with the usb.  It did update the usb 2.0 root hub driver but still no change with the detection of usb or secondary ide

Hi ABC,
Go into the device manager & see if there are any red or yellow "?" or "!" next to the secondary ide & usb.
To get into the device manager, right click my computer>properties>hardware>device manager.
Take care.
