PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:98
Problem Application Name & Version:windows 98
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:98 pc wont boot. needs boot disc

When I boot pc, get message 'insert bootable disc'. Its my friends pc.
Thing is they dont have 98 disc. I have a 98 SE disc, so I tried that. It got so far then came up with error message 'cant copy, file path doesnt exist' or something. Can I restore to a previous time? on start up ( I'm sure I've done this before ), cos there must be a problem now that didnt exsist before. I can easilly format C and start  from fresh, but will this solve the prob? Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Win 898 has not System Restore like Win ME or XP -  but you can try this
Download a Win 98 bootdisk maker from www.bootdisk.com - run it to create the boot floppy, then use that floppy to boot the problem box (do NOT attempt to use w Win 98SE floppy!)
type SYS C: at the A:\> prompt, and the remove the floppy, and reboot
That should do it.

Is the hard drive being recognized when the computer first starts? Check the POST screen to see if it is even listed. It should say something like
Primary master <HDD name and size>
Primary slave <CD-Rom device name>
Secondary master <device name and size if you have one>
Secondary slave <device name and size if you have one>

If the Primary master is blank then the hard drive might be dead.
