tiptop:

Generally, if your mainboad has USB 1.1, you will need to purchase an upgrade card to insert into an expansion slot to use 2.0 . What is the application? Is is for a network card? Scanner? The reason I ask is that some people are very excited about upgrading to USB 2.0, but the bottleneck on the system is actually somewhere else. For example, some people are eager to upgrade their USB for their network adapter which connects them to the Internet. However, they forget that their Internet connection is 1.5 megabits per second at best, and USB 1.1 is handling their conection at, let's say, 6 megabits. Upgrading to USB 2.0 will not improve performance in these cases.

Hope this helps
