PLEASE SUPPLY RELEVANT INFORMATION:
Operating System Version:Windows 98
Problem Application Name & Version:IE 6
Problem Hardware Make & Model:
Error Messages:IE was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

I have not been able to download anything in a few weeks. It started with a problem in OE and not being able to read the bodies of my messages. I finally unloaded IE and reloaded and that seemed to fix that problem. But I still can't download anything. I can do an update from Microsoft but thats it. Anything else I try to download from any site gives me the error message above. This is playing havoc with my online class as my teacher likes to send stuff by attachments which I have to download. I have emptied cookies, fragmented, use both spy bot and adaware. I use avg for my virus. I am out of ideas. Can anyone help?

Hi G26,
Take a look at this link & see if it'll help. It's not your error message exactly, but maybe something there will help.

Take care.

Thanks for the link sj1184. Did not help. Any other suggestions? Also I really appreciate you replying. I have been busy getting ready for finals or I would have been back sooner.

Hiya

When you used AddAware, did you use the tweaks, or run as is? If the later, try this:

launch the program ... on the start-up screen, you will need to first run the Webupdate Feature (globe at the top), or click "check for updates" on the start screen to get the Reference File up to date.

Please use either the Custom Scan with Memory and Both registry scans ON. Also.... make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning.

Then, see that you have these options checked:
Under Ad-aware 6 Settings, Tweaks, Scanning Engine:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under Ad-aware 6 Settings, Tweaks, Cleaning Engine:
"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Next ...

Run Ad-aware 6.
Mark the objects you wish to eliminate for removal. There are many options available with a right-click.
Make a Quarantine only if you do not have the Auto-Quarantine option ON.
Then choose "Next" to remove the chosen objects.
Finally ... Reboot

That ought to get rid of most of your spyware.

When you've done all that, go to www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Regards

I changed the settings in ad-aware. I also have spy-bot. The new settings on ad-aware found two items not found before. Once I did this first thing I went to download the highjacker and could not. I got the same message I receive when trying to open attachments: IE was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.
Any other suggestions?
