Operating System Version: XP Pro

Problem Hardware Make & Model: P4 2.8G HT ASUS P4P800S M/board
Error Messages: Blue Screen

PC is blue screening shortly after booting up.
Message says to check memory and/or video adapter .. have changed both but still the same problem ... changed motherboard but the new M/B would not return any signal from both video cards i tried ..
could it be the CPU or HDD ?

psommerv:

You might try booting into safe mode. When windows first starts booting, press the F8 key. You may hear a few beeps when the computer complains. That's okay. You should get to a screen that asks you which mode windows should use to boot. Choose Safe Mode. If your computer boots properly (albeit more slowly) into safe mode, then you know the problem is not in the basic Windows install.

Now reboot again, this time pressing F8 and waiting for that same screen to come up giving you the boot choices. This time choose Step-by-Step confirmation.  When the machine boots, watch the screen to see which drivers and services are loading. Then, when the system crashes, watch to see which is the last driver or service to load. It should show them one by one on the screen.

Hope this helps

funny how i never thought to do that before i formatted my HDD ... seeing as i have done that many times before .. next time LOL

but at this stage i cant even get windows to complete an install .. fails everytime it gets to somewhere near the installing network option .. but not exactly the same place .. and this is with a new motherboard .. i have a feeling its the CPU as this is the last piece besides the power supply i have not replaced ..
